Scope of Practice: Family practice medicine originated from general practice. Family physicians treat patients of all ages and both sexes for a wide variety of common conditions. A family practitioner is trained in the fields of internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, surgery, psychiatry and preventive medicine. They provide preventive health care, such as well-baby visits, immunizations, and screening for cholesterol and cancer.

Family physicians perform minor office surgical procedures, care for patients with chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and in some areas, provide prenatal care and deliver babies. Therefore, unlike many other specialists, family doctors must pass a test every seven years to stay certified by their specialty board; the American Board of Family Practice. Our providers also are required to take continuing education courses every year. A board-certified family doctor is well-trained to provide you with up-to-date, new medical developments.

Services: The Primary Care Clinic provides services for acute and chronic illnesses. Our scope of care encompasses the gamut of Family Practice care excluding prenatal care. Cases requiring evaluation or treatment by a specialist are referred to the appropriate medical or surgical specialty clinic either at a local military treatment facility or through the local civilian TRICARE network based on availability and level of care required.

School Physicals Appointments: To schedule an appointment, call 314-8000, ext 2 between 0730 and 0830 the day you want the appointment, or call 1-866-645-4584 between 0600 and 0730 the day you want the appointment and request a medical update appointment.

School Physical Requirements: Children enrolling for the first time in child care, pre-kindergarten or the Virginia school system, grades kindergarten through 12, by law, require a physical exam. A new physical exam will not be required if you have documentation of a phsycial exam withing 12 months of enrollment.

Criteria for School Physicals: The parent is responsible for bringing to the appointment the school physical form, with Part 1 medical history completed, in addition to the child's immunization record.
